
Komodo Dragon(scientific name: Varanus komodoensis. Common names: Ora, Komodo Dragon, Buaja Darat, and land crocodile)are the worlds heaviest lizard. They can reach a length of 10 feet with an average of 8 feet and the weight of 200 pounds. Females usually are 8 feet or under and about 150 pounds. They have a keen sense of smell and seek out carrion up to 5miles if aided by a favorable wind. The komodo is a fast moving and agile lizard, they can climb trees and good swimmers like all moniter lizards. The Komodo's teeth are laterally compressed with serrated edges. They have about 60 teeth that are replaced frequently and are positioned to get chunks out of its prey. Their highly flexible skull allows it to swallow larger pieces of its food. Their mouth is full of virulent bacteria, which will infect u soon after if u survive the attack. Baby dragons up to 29 inches live in tress and eat insects, eggs, birds, small mammals and other reptiles. they will leave the tree for carrion. Komodo dragons are restricted to the Lesser Sunda Islands of Rinca, Komodo, Flores and the smaller islands of Gili, Montang and Padar. They discovered Komodo's after WW1.Komodo dragons are usually solitary animals, but not during the mating season. Males defend a territory and patrol up to 1.2 miles per day. Territories depend on the dragons size. They allow a dragon to go through its territory when on a food run and they share hunting grounds. A dragon will maintain their burrow and occasionally will swim from island to island. They maintain the body temperature by using its burrow. The Komodo is carnivorous and cannibalistic and it has a prodigious appetite. They usually kill prey as large as pigs and small deer, and have been known to take down an adult water buffalo, they are opportunistic feeders and will take down anything it can over power like a injured human or small dragons. In the zoo's, the dragons are fed frozen rats. Komodo's leave to about 20 - 40 years and will lay up to 30 eggs. In the wild today there are up to 3000 - 5000 Komodo dragons.
